Ηow to properly use a fire extinguisher

We saw in a previous article the types of fire extinguishers and the fire categories. In this article we will look at how to properly use a fire extinguisher. Proper use of a fire extinguisher can save lives and greatly reduce the damage from a fire. It is important to know how to properly use a fire extinguisher, even if we hope we never need one.

  • Familiarity with fire extinguishers.

Before any emergency, it is good to know:

Where the nearest fire extinguisher is.

What type of extinguisher is it (dry powder, foam, CO2, liquid chemical solutions, etc.)

For which categories of fire it is suitable (solids, liquids, oils, etc.).

Whether it is suitable for use in the presence of electricity.

If it is properly maintained and in good condition.

  • The P.A.S.S. method.

The most common method of using a fire extinguisher is described by the acronym P.A.S.S.: Pull - Aim - Squeeze - Sweep

🔹Pull

Remove the safety pin that prevents accidental use

🔹 Aim

Point the nozzle (or hose) towards the base of the fire - not at the flames.

🔹 Squeeze

Squeeze the handle to begin firing the extinguishing agent.

🔹Sweep

Using side-to-side movements, sweep the base of the fire until it goes out.

  • Ηow to properly use a fire extinguisher

I face the fire with the wind at my back

For extinguishing solid fuel fires I target the fire

For extinguishing liquid fuel fires I aim at the base of the fire

To extinguish leaking liquid fuel fires I start at the point of leakage.

I use several extinguishers at the same time instead of one after the other

I do not leave immediately after the fire is extinguished because there may be a resurgence

I refill the fire extinguishers immediately after use

  • Useful tips

In any case of fire, immediately call 199.

Before you approach the fire, test it to see if the extinguisher works.

Maintain an initial distance of 3-4 metres from the fire and only approach it gradually if it recedes.

Always have an escape exit behind you. Don't get trapped!

If the fire does not go out quickly, leave the room immediately and close the door behind you.

  • Checking and maintenance

Fire extinguishers should be checked every quarter by the owner and every year by a qualified technician. In a later article we will look in detail at the maintenance required for each type of extinguisher. An empty or damaged fire extinguisher is useless and even dangerous in an emergency.

How to properly use a fire extinguisher correctly is a simple but life-saving procedure as long as we are properly trained and prepared. Educate your family members and make sure everyone knows how to act in an emergency.
