When oil or grease overheats, it can instantly ignite. The most common causes include:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Cooking at high temperatures<\/strong>: Overheating oil, butter, or other fats can lead to ignition.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Unattended cooking<\/strong>: This is the number one cause of kitchen fires. Leaving food cooking without supervision is extremely dangerous.<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Faulty thermostat in electric frying appliances<\/strong> (e.g., deep fryers): Malfunctions can cause excessive heating.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><hr \/><h3>How to Safely Handle a Cooking Oil\/Grease Fire in the Kitchen<\/h3><p><strong>If oil catches fire<\/strong>:<\/p><ul><li><p><strong>Immediately turn off the heat source<\/strong> (electricity, gas, etc.).
